AboutAbout Trackside

Trackside is an iPhone app for UK rail travel. It brings live train times, your train's reported position, how busy trains usually are, platforms and Delay Repay help into one place, and says plainly where each piece of information comes from and how far to trust it.

Who is Trackside for?

Anyone travelling by train in Great Britain, from the daily commute to a one-off day out. It's built around the trains you use most: set your commuter trains once and Trackside keeps an eye on them.

What does it help with?

  • Knowing whether your train is on time, and where it was last reported.
  • Getting an idea of the platform before it's announced.
  • Finding a quieter train or the right carriage to board.
  • Spotting a tight connection before you miss it.
  • Not losing out on Delay Repay because a claim was too fiddly to make.

How Trackside treats information

  • A predicted platform is always labelled Predicted, never shown as confirmed.
  • A train's position is called its reported location, because it comes from the railway's running reports, not GPS.
  • Busyness says whether it's the operator's typical pattern or a figure for your journey.
  • Money in My Claims is only ever what you entered, never an estimate.
  • What passengers report is free for everyone, always, because passengers provide it.

Where the information comes from

  • Live train times and platforms: Darwin, National Rail's live train information system.
  • Train positions: Network Rail's train movement data.
  • Busyness: train operators' own loading data, carried in National Rail's data.
  • Punctuality records: National Rail's historical service performance data.
  • Tube, buses and cycles in London: TfL Open Data.
  • Flood and severe weather warnings: the Environment Agency and the Met Office.

How often each source updates, and how complete it is, varies. None of these organisations runs or endorses Trackside.
